710 – International Oil Day
July 10, or 7/10, is celebrated as International Oil Day in the United States, a day dedicated to honoring cannabis concentrates.
The date was chosen because, when written as 7/10, it closely resembles the word “OIL” when flipped upside down. This clever visual connection inspired cannabis enthusiasts to create a unique celebration, distinct from the long-established 4/20 (Cannabis Day) observance.
The origins of “710” are somewhat ambiguous; while the term appeared on Urban Dictionary as early as 2010, it wasn’t associated with cannabis concentrates until 2011.
The concept of 710 Oil Day can be traced back to 2011-2012, coinciding with the rapid rise in popularity of cannabis concentrates, such as shatter, wax, and rosin, which became more widely available and sought after for their potency and efficiency. This surge in concentrate consumption created a need for a celebration distinct from the traditional 420 holiday (on April 20), which traditionally focuses on smoking marijuana flower.
The term “710” gained further exposure thanks to TaskRok, an influential figure in the concentrate community, and the creation of the 710 Cup. The 710 Cup, founded around 2012, was specifically designed to showcase the art of making cannabis concentrates and to celebrate their role in cannabis culture. While TaskRok and others in the industry helped popularize the term, there is no single person definitively credited with coining “710.”
The grassroots nature of the term’s adoption meant that many different people contributed to its rise. Over time, “710” became widely recognized as a celebration of cannabis oil, and the significance of July 10th as International Oil Day grew. It has since become an annual event, with cannabis businesses, dispensaries, and enthusiasts all joining in to celebrate concentrates with special promotions, events, and sales tailored specifically to oils and extracts.
While 4/20 has been a cornerstone of cannabis culture for decades, 7/10 represents a newer, more niche celebration. Reflecting the changing landscape of cannabis consumption, 7/10 highlights the growing prominence of concentrates. With increasing interest in products like hash, dabs, wax, shatter, and rosin, this “cannabis holiday” has become a day for enthusiasts to celebrate the many forms of cannabis oil. In recent years, the significance of 7/10 has grown, with dispensaries and cannabis businesses offering special promotions, events, and sales tailored to concentrates and oils, further cementing its place in the cannabis calendar.
