Cannabis Culture Awards 2009

The Cannabis Culture Award, in Dutch called the ‘Cannabis Cultuurprijs’, was established in The Netherlands in 2004 to honor individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the world of hemp and cannabis.

During the 2009 ceremony, Cannabis Culture Awards were presented to Dries van Agt and Dr. Hans-Georg Behr.

As Prime Minister of the Netherlands from 1977 to 1982, Dries van Agt played a pivotal role in the country’s tolerance policy (gedoogbeleid), which in 1976 officially separated ‘soft’ from ‘hard’ drugs. This groundbreaking legislation paved the way for cannabis decriminalization and the creation of the Dutch coffeeshop system.

Dr. Hans-Georg Behr, a German psychiatrist, Green Party parliamentarian, history professor (University of Vienna), and the owner of the world’s largest collection of antique cannabis smoking pipes, is best known for his book Von Hanf ist die Rede: Kultur und Politik einer Droge (Hemp is the Question: The Culture and Politics of a Drug). This work is considered the German counterpart to The Emperor Wears No Clothes.

The Hash Marihuana & Hemp Museum Amsterdam presents the Cannabis Culture Award to individuals who have distinguished themselves in the fight for the acceptance of cannabis in all its forms, ensuring that this extraordinary plant is both fully utilized in the future and its history fully recognized.

A committed counter-movement has existed for decades, steadily gaining strength and authority in recent years. These influential individuals and groups, both in the Netherlands and abroad, argue that reason, justice, and humanity must prevail over political agendas.

The Hash Marihuana & Hemp Museum Amsterdam awards the Cannabis Culture Award to those who have taken a prominent or behind-the-scenes role in this struggle, nobly working to ensure that the future of this extraordinary plant is secured and its history fully understood. A certificate and a monetary award are presented during the Cannabis Culture Awards Ceremony, which takes place in both Amsterdam and Barcelona.
